Thunderstorms to hit UK over next 24 hours as flood warnings put in place

Parts of the UK could be hit by thunderstorms as several flood warnings have been put in place.

Streets flooded across the country on Saturday as the Met Office warns more miserable weather is to come, reports the Mirror.

The North East is among the areas which have been issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms for Sunday.

A Met Office forecaster said: “Sunday will see further warnings in force for thunderstorms with heavy rain forecast though there is going to be some sunshine around for some of us.

“It will be fairly cloudy with outbreaks of heavy rain which could turn fairly persistent across Northern Ireland and Southern Scotland where we have got warnings in force where heavy flooding could cause disruption to travel.”

The North East was issued with the warning on Saturday morning predicting "heavy rain and thunderstorms", which could cause flooding and disruption.

People have warned that their journeys may be affected by the wet weather, and there could be possible travel delays on trains.

The warning is in place until 9pm on Sunday.

Today's weather forecast for the region states: "Many places dry, with sunny spells to start the morning.

"Showers developing fairly widely by the afternoon with a chance of hail and thunder, these probably most frequent across the Pennines.

"Light winds initially, becoming rather breezy by late afternoon. Maximum temperature 21 °C."

And for tonight, the Met Office said: "Showers and thunderstorms fading from most areas during the evening, though a few showers continuing overnight.

"Rather cloudy, but clear spells becoming more prolonged towards dawn. Breezy conditions easing. Minimum temperature 10 °C."
