, the alert is set to be active from 12pm this afternoon (Wednesday) and will last until 11.59pm.

Heavy rain is expected from mid afternoon, as the yellow Met Office warning kicks in from lunchtime, while lightning is predicted from around 6pm.

This  alert covers much of the central belt, and people are being warned to prepare for possible travel disruption and the chance of flooding in places.

The dramatic conditions look set to continue into Thursday, when thunder is expected once again in the city at around 4pm, easing up or turning to rain by Friday.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services. Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
