Thunderstorms heading for Leeds as Met Office issues yellow weather warning

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued for Leeds.

The Met Office has put the warning in place as thunderstorms are likely to cause disruption between noon and midnight today (Wednesday).

The storm may lead to flooding as a result of heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Although some places may not be affected by the storms, the places where they do occur, there is a possibility of ‘torrential downpours’ with 25 to 35mm of rain falling in an hour.

The Met Office said: “Although some places will remain dry, slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms may lead to disruption due to flooding.

“These showers and thunderstorms will only slowly die out through the evening.”

The advice on the Met website also states that people in the region should expect:

  • Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life

  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures

  • Some communities might become cut off if roads flood

  • Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
