The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for parts of Wales as well as South and North West England.
It comes shortly after the UK experienced record-breaking high temperatures amid a scorching heatwave. The yellow warning covers some major cities including Brighton, Portsmouth, Cardiff, Gloucester and Chester.
From today, members of the public should be wary of slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms which could lead to difficult driving conditions and road closures. There is also a chance that flooding and lightning strikes could occur, increasing the chances of delays and cancellations to train and bus services.
The yellow warning also bring the small risk of power cuts to homes, businesses and other services. The Met Office said: "A largely cloudy day across the region, with scattered showers.
"Showers perhaps heavy and they may also merge into some longer spells of rain. The odd rumble of thunder is also possible.
"Feeling humid, with light winds. Maximum temperature 19 °C." For tonight, it adds: "Showers gradually easing through the evening and overnight, with most places becoming dry by the morning. Staying largely cloudy, with light winds. Minimum temperature 10 °C."
While some areas are expected to remain dry, where thunderstorms occur people can expect as much as 20 to 25mm of rain in less than an hour. The Met Office also warns that one or two places could see 40 to 50mm of rainfall in two or three hours with hail and lightning posing as potential additional hazards.
The yellow warning will only be in effect today until 10pm, after which it is expected the weather will begin to settle down.
