Thunderstorm warning for Greater Manchester as Met Office issue weather alert

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are set to hit Greater Manchester.

A yellow weather alert warning of thunderstorms has been issued by the Met Office.

The warning is in place from 1pm until 9pm on Thursday evening with forecasters saying there could be travel disruption and potential power loss in some areas.

Flooding and damage to buildings could also occur as a result of the storms, the warning said.

Thunderstorms are expected to break out later today with 10-15mm of rainfall expected.

The Met Office said: "There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus."

Train services could also be affected.

Greater Manchester, Warrington, Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester are all included in the warning area.

The Met Office warning said: "Whilst many areas will be dry today some thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon.

"These will gradually die out from the west during the evening though a few may persist into the night over the East Midlands and into East Anglia.

"Rainfall accumulations of 10-15 mm in 1-2 hours are likely for some spots though most places will be dry or see very little rainfall.
