Thunderstorm warning extended into THIRD day for parts of the North East

A weather warning for thunderstorms has been extended for parts of the North East.

As ChronicleLive reported yesterday, the Met Office have yellow warnings in place for Sunday and Monday.

The alerts cover the entire region and most of the country.

Forecasters expected the storms to have passed by Tuesday but are now warning people in County Durham to expect more.

The rest of the North East should avoid more storms on Tuesday but predictions about the storms have been changeable.

The yellow warning comes into effect on Sunday night at noon and will last until midnight on Monday.

But for parts of County Durham, it has been extended until midnight on Tuesday, meaning residents can expect 60 hours of storms.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Where thunderstorms do develop, 20 to 30 mm rain may fall locally in an hour, and close to 40 mm of rain may fall in two or three hours."

What to expect

According to the Met Office , here's what a yellow warning thunderstorm looks like:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
