Thundersnow in West Lothian as lightning and snow combine in rare weather phenomenon

Storm Ciara hit the Lothians with full force this weekend, with the high winds and rain turning to snow across Edinburgh and the central belt of Scotland on Monday afternoon (10 February).

Lothian Buses have announced delays, and the M8 is facing major disruption as the snow holds up rush hour commuters.

The snow storm has also caused chaotic scenes at Edinburgh Waverley and queues as trains were cancelled.

And as if all that wasn't enough, lightning and thunder has been reported in West Lothian - causing extra-heavy flurries of thundersnow.

The rare weather phenomenon occurs when thunderstorms - which are much more common in summer months - form in wintry conditions.

If the weather is cold the rain associated with a thunderstorm can then fall as snow and is therefore called thundersnow.

It's unusual only because it can only occur in a few months of the year.

When thundersnow occurs at night the lightning appears brighter - this is because the light reflects off the snowflakes.

The Met Office says thundersnow is often very atmospheric but the snow dampens the sound of thunder. While the thunder from a typical thunderstorm might be heard many miles away, the thunder during a thundersnow event will only be heard if you are within two to three miles of the lightning.

It produces heavy snowfall rates of up to 5cm to 10cm per hour and can severely limit visibility when travelling.
