Thunder waive Markel Brown just 3 days after announcing his signing

On Friday—just three days after announcing his signing—the Oklahoma City Thunder announced that the club had requested waivers on guard Markel Brown.

The expectation is that Brown will suit up for the Thunder’s G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue.

Brown, a 27-year-old guard, was originally drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 44th overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft. The day after the draft, Brown was traded to the Brooklyn Nets, where he spent the first two years of his career.

After not playing in the NBA during the 2016-17 season, Brown appeared in four games for the Houston Rockets during the 2017-18 campaign before spending the duration of last season in Turkey, playing in the EuroLeague.

When Brown’s signing was announced by the Thunder on September 24, it was reported that he was signed to a camp deal, so the fact that he was waived after just three days was a bit of a surprise to many who follow and cover the team.

The Thunder will officially begin their season when the club hosts its first media day in Oklahoma City without Russell Westbrook on Monday. Training camp will then begin on Tuesday.

Unfortunately for Brown, it doesn’t appear that he’ll be around for it, though he may find future opportunity with the Thunder as a G League call up.
