Thunder could hit the North East as heavy rain and strong winds predicted to continue

The North East is set for more unsettled weather this week.

After a wet weekend, things will perk up from Monday with higher temperatures and sunny spells but it's all downhill from there.

Heavy rain will begin again on Wednesday and there's even a risk of thunder on Thursday.

Here is what the Met Office predicts for the week ahead:

Sunday evening

"Some evening sunshine is likely, but showers will continue through the evening and overnight, together with sometimes brisk southwesterly winds.

"Minimum temperature 10 °C."

Monday

"Broken cloud and occasional showers, perhaps sometimes persistent.

"Southwesterly winds will be brisk over exposed areas, but feeling pleasant in the more sheltered east with sunnier intervals. Maximum temperature 19 °C."

Tuesday to Thursday

" Mainly dry with warm sunny spells on Tuesday, and light winds.

"Occasionally heavy rain will spread northwards on Wednesday, feeling cooler.

"Sunshine and showers, possibly thundery on Thursday but feeling pleasant."
