Thugs with meat cleaver break into sleeping woman's home and threaten to chop her hand off if she didn't remove rings

Thugs wielding a meat cleaver broke into a woman's house before waking her and threatening to chop her hand off if she didn't remove her rings.

Police are hunting the two men following the terrifying raid in Moston, in which cash, a laptop, watches, mobile phones and a designer handbag were stolen.

The 55-year-old woman was in bed at around 10pm on Thursday (April 18) when the robbers burst into the home on Mapledon Road.

She was forced to hand over jewellery at knifepoint. The men threatened to cut her hand off.

GMP said the terrified woman ran to a friend's house when the raiders left.

Detectives hunting the two men are appealing for information.

One of the thugs is described 'Eastern European' or 'possibly Romanian'; between 20 and 25; of slim build; with a 'long face'; and around 5 ft 6.

He was wearing a light grey hooded top with the hood pulled up around his face.

Residents have reported seeing two men, also believed to be Eastern European, acting suspiciously while driving around the area in an Audi A4.

Detective Inspector Gareth Levitt-Jones said: “This is the stuff of nightmares, to wake up with a meat cleaver at your throat and be threatened into handing over your jewellery all while still in bed is terrifying.

"I am so thankful that the woman came to no harm and has family around her for support.

"The two offenders obviously have no concerns about entering a person’s home and making threats in order to steal from them, they need to be found before they can put someone else through this horrifying ordeal.

"We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen two men acting suspiciously in the area on Thursday night, we are currently searching through CCTV and will have officers on patrol in the area while we conduct our investigation.”
