Liverpool’s abandoned city centre was targeted in a spate of burglaries this week, as businesses were forced to close due to the coronavirus lockdown.
Officers on patrol in Great Charlotte Street arrested a man at Wetherspoons at around 2am on Tuesday 24 March, after a report was received of “entry being gained”.
Jeffrey Day from Langton Road in Wavertree was charged with burglary and appeared at Liverpool Magistrates on Wednesday.
Earlier on Monday night around 8.25pm, officers were called to residential accommodation on Oldham Street after reports of a break-in.
A 25-year-old man from Kensington was arrested on suspicion of “burglary and common assault” and released “under investigation”.
At 11.30pm the same evening, a 54-year-old man from the city centre was arrested and later released “under investigation” on “suspicion of burglary” after gaining entry to New Century Apartments, on Tithebarn Street.
Detective Inspector Amy Smith said: “I want to reassure businesses, some of which may now be closed for the foreseeable future, that we will continue to patrol in the right areas, and respond to reports.
“These arrests demonstrate our ongoing commitment to responding to such incidents, both at businesses and homes, so tell us what you know and see and we’ll take action.”
