Thugs storm Scots shop in bid to raid ATM as police probe 'linked incidents'

Police are probing 'linked incidents' after three thugs stormed a Scots shop in an attempt to raid an ATM this morning.

The men forced entry to the Day Today store on Calderbank Main Street, North Lanarkshire, by damaging the external metal shutters and the entrance door at around 2am on Friday, April 23.

Damage was caused to an internal door with the intention of forcing entry to a cash machine but they weren't able to gain access.

They then fled the scene in a blue Audi estate car in the direction of Chapelhall and the M8.

It comes just a day after a similar break-in at a Day Today shop on Woodland Crescent in Cambuslang, when yobs made off with a five-figure sum of cash taken from an ATM.

Police are appealing for information in relation to the Calderbank incident.

One of the men is described as being of stocky build and wearing a dark hooded top with white patches on the shoulders, dark jogging bottoms with white stripes on the sides, dark trainers and a dark face mask.

The second is of average build and wearing a dark hooded top with a light coloured emblem on the left of the chest. He was also wearing dark jogging bottoms with a light emblem on the left thigh, trainers and gloves.

The third man was of average build, wearing a dark coloured hooded top and dark coloured jogging bottoms and dark trainers.

Detective Sergeant Mark Nelson of Coatbridge Police Station said: "Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and we would urge anyone with information to come forward.

"We would urge anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity around the shop or the wider area overnight to get in touch. We also be keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the blue Audi car or knows of its whereabouts.

"An investigation is also ongoing into a similar break-in at a shop on Woodland Crescent in Cambuslang on Thursday, April 22 and we are treating these incidents as linked.

"Anyone with information about this incident in Calderbank can call 101, quoting incident 0221 of April 23, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
