Thugs ram Aldi in Portobello, Edinburgh, with pick-up truck in bid to steal ATM

Aldi in Portobello, Edinburgh , is currently closed after a gang-of-three rammed through the wall with a Ford Ranger in an attempt to steal the ATM.

Police were alerted to the supermarket on Portobello High Street, at around 2am on Saturday.

The vehicle involved is being described by police as a red or orange Fort Ranger, which had three people inside, all dressed in dark clothing.

Luckily, the thugs never managed to steal anything but a significant amount of damaged has been caused to the store causing it to remain closed.

Officers say the car was seen heading towards Leith, and they are looking for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

Chief Inspector Alan Carson from Edinburgh Police Division said: "Officers were called to a supermarket on Portobello High Street at around 2am on Saturday 28, December after a pick-up truck had been used to attempt to steal an ATM from the premises.

"Damage has been caused to the building but no property is believed to have been stolen.

"The vehicle used is described as a red or orange Ford Ranger which had three people inside, all dressed in dark clothing. The vehicle was last seen heading towards the Leith area.

"Anyone with information to assist officers investigating the incident should call Police Scotland on 101 and quote incident number 0376 of 28 December. Alternatively a report can be made anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
