Thugs let off fireworks, set fire to bins and torch playground during Friday night mayhem in Greater Manchester

Unruly thugs created a headache for firefighters on Friday night by setting fire to bins, torching playgrounds and letting off fireworks across Greater Manchester.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service posted about the evening of mayhem on their website, saying they were called to 'several nuisance fires'.

At 5pm, fire crews rushed to Carisbrook Street in Harpurhey following reports of a blaze in the street.

When they arrived, they found a group of youths at the scene, who were heard saying they planned to throw petrol on the flames.

Firefighters were also scrambled to Cameron Street, Leigh at 5.20pm, to reports of a bin fire outside a shop.

Around 13 children reportedly let off fireworks during the incident.

Later on, at 8.15pm, firefighters were called to Kingsway Park in Davyhulme to reports of children setting fire to items in a playground.

It's been a busy few days for firefighters as the region gears up for Bonfire Night on November 5.

On Thursday, October 31, a watch manager was hit by a firework while tackling a bonfire in Crumpsall Park.

Paul Marston, 50, was injured after a group of around 15 youths threw lit fireworks at a crew from Blackley.

It comes after a bottle was thrown at firefighters as they tried to put a fire out in a park in Oldham on Tuesday.

Crews were also called twice in a couple of hours to the same mill in Leigh following reports of fires.
