Thugs pick on two cage fighters dressed in drag - and quickly get knocked out

Two cage fighters have spoken out after flooring a pair of thugs who picked on them for dressing in drag.

James Lilley was with pal Daniel Lerwell on a night out in Swansea 10 years ago when two drunken yobs decided to have a pop - unaware how badly it would work out for them.

It was a final blowout before they started 12 weeks of gruelling fighting training.

For most of the night everyone took the dress-up in good spirits, Wales Online reports .

But CCTV shows two men make the unfortunate decision to pick on the cage fighters in an unprovoked fashion.

Mr Lerwell responded to the mindless thuggery by leaving them both sprawling on the floor.

With the two men on the floor Mr Lilley is then comically captured walking back and picking up his handbag which he dropped during the unprovoked scuffle.

CCTV footage of the incident was captured and ended up being viewed all over the world, racking up millions of views.

Mr Lilley, a successful bare knuckle boxer and martial artist, told Wales Online: "We went out at the time, a few of us had a show coming up in 12 weeks time and it was out last night out before we all started training again.

"I can't remember what was said but someone came up with the idea for us to dress up as women. There was 12 to 13 of us and we were all doing mixed martial arts at the time.

"It was very late on in the night and we'd been down Wind Street and different bars and everyone had been in good spirits.

"It got to about 10.30pm or 11pm and we were heading over to Kingsway to go to the old Time and Envy when there was this guy coming towards us with his shirt off and blood on him.

"He came over with his friend storming towards me. Daniel then hit the two guys and they went down. I went back for my handbag!"

Mr Lilley added: "I was working for Lloyds TSB in Llansamlet at the time and I can remember going to the canteen and seeing the Evening Post reporting what happened.

"Everybody was laughing and it just felt like a joke at the time.

"Then it started becoming bigger and bigger and we started getting all these TV and radio stations getting in touch with us.

"Probably the maddest thing we were asked to do was The Big Fat Quiz Of The Year.

"Me and Dan, two boys from Townhill, finding ourselves rubbing shoulders with celebrities like Jimmy Carr and they were coming up to us to talk to us afterwards.

"It took about 12 to 18 months to die down properly but people still talk about it even to this day.

"I came off Facebook eventually – I had so many friend requests, and when my birthday came around it was crazy.

"At the time social media was not as big as it is now. It's a shame because we could have used it to do something for a good cause."

Mr Lerwell is an undefeated British champion bare knuckle boxer, who fights to raise awareness of autism in the name of his five-year-old autistic son Theo, aged five.

Remembering the incident and the media storm that followed, he said: "It was a bit mad. I had people coming onto me I didn't even know saying: 'Are you the cross dresser?'

"It was funny the first couple of months but it still happens even today.

"I remember I went to the shop and on the front page of the Evening Post it said 'Men beat up by drag queens'. I didn't realise it was me and James and I bought it because I wanted to read the story. I could not believe it was about us.

"I have gone out in fancy dress since but not as a woman.

"Perhaps me and James could do it again for the 10th anniversary!"
