Thugs have trashed almost half of Edinburgh's Just Eat bike stands, council reveals

Yobs have smashed over 600 Just Eat bike docking stations in Edinburgh – leaving nearly half of them damaged or destroyed since 2018, the council has revealed.

Police Scotland are "actively seeking prosecutions" after the popular scheme has been massively impacted by the vandals.

More than 40 per cent of docking hoops in Edinburgh’s bike share scheme have been damaged or destroyed since the scheme launched in September 2018, the city council has said.

The bikes can be unlocked from the metal docking hoops using an app, the bike ridden and then returned to any docking station in the city, but vandals have wrecked more than 600, it has now emerged.

Of the more than 600 hoops affected, 230 have been replaced and 405 remain out of use, reports the TransportXtra website.

Lesley Macinnes, convener of Edinburgh’s transport and environment committee, told the website: “There are multiple schemes in Norway that use the same technology as the Edinburgh scheme.

"These see an extremely low number of hoops broken each year."

"Prosecution is being actively sought by Police Scotland where appropriate, however intelligence (and anecdotal operator findings) suggest that the most prolific offenders tend to be of a younger age.”

Council company Transport for Edinburgh is responsible for repairing circa 80 of the docking stations and operator Serco is responsible for circa 20.
