Thugs clash with Dublin vigil marchers after firework allegedly thrown into mourning crowd

Mourners who held a vigil in memory of hit and run victim Thiago Cortes clashed with local thugs yesterday after an item was allegedly thrown into the marching crowd.

Thiago Cortes died on Tuesday evening after being knocked down in a hit-and-run near Dublin's 3Arena late on Monday night.

A car believed to be involved in the incident was found nearby, and a manhunt is currently underway by gardai as they try to find the people involved in the heartless hit-and-run.

As the crowds, which included Thiago's delivery driver colleagues, walked from the Spire at O'Connell Street to North Wall Quay, they were confronted by the yobs only a stone's throw away from where the vigil started.

Marching on Buckingham Street as they headed onto Sean McDermott Street, a gang of apparent thugs can be seen running away from the crowd after the item, believed to be a firework, was allegedly thrown.

Those at the front of the crowd marching at the vigil were stopped as they headed onto Sheriff Street and gardai headed back to the scene where the clash broke out.

Dublin Live's Mark O'Brien reported from the march and said that a group shouted "shut the **** up" at the crowd as they passed the Spar on North Strand.

One onlooker who saw the fight break out told Dublin Live: "The delivery drivers were marching after one of their colleagues was killed in a hit and run down near the 3Arena.

"They were marching down Buckingham Street when apparently one of the local lads threw a firework into the crowd, and that's what caused all this."

Footage from the scene shows the marchers confronting the group, who escaped behind gates of a local housing complex.

There were no reports of any injuries as a result of the incident.

Dublin Live has contacted An Garda Siochana for a statement.
