Thugs break in to and ransack Ballyfermot United dressing rooms in senseless act of vandalism

A south Dublin football club were horrified to find their dressing rooms had been broken into and ransacked.

Officials from Ballyfermot United were shocked when they arrived at their dressing rooms in Le Fanu Park to find a window had been forced open and equipment had been strewn everywhere.

The cruel thugs even ripped some of the club's jerseys in a senseless act of vandalism.

The club shared pictures of the aftermath of the damage on social media.

They said: "We make strides as a club and then Come up to training ground and dressing rooms ripped open, destroyed and to make it worse we found our jerseys ripped and cut.

"I hope you're very proud of yourselves and your parents.

"But we will go on again and should anyone have any information please contact us."

The mindless damage comes just a day after a newly opened skate park in the same area was vandalised on the first night it opened.

The new Le Fanu Skate Park and Playground in Ballyfermot has been in the works for over four years.

The state-of-the-art skate and BMX facility, costing up to €2 million to construct, as well as a new community playground, were finally opened yesterday after an initial spring 2020 date was pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

But there were reports of anti-social behaviour at the venue on Tuesday night.

The following morning, rubbish - including plastic bags, bottles, and an abandoned trolley - were scattered around the park.

Tree branches were broken, and graffiti is now adorning parts of both the main concrete bowl and the playground.

Local Sinn Fein Councillor Daithi Doolan confirmed he is working with Dublin City Council to increase security at the facility by way of installing security cameras and putting a fence fully around the outside, in response to fears the park could become a hotspot for reckless behaviour.

He said: "The skateboard park and playground has been in the planning for years.

"It will be a great recreation facility for our young people.

"Last night's activities are hugely regrettable and wrong.

"I contacted City Council management this morning raising concerns about the lack of fencing and security for the park. I will be working with other councillors to ensure the park is properly fenced.

"The park must be locked up at night and CCTV fitted as soon as possible. This will ensure that young people can use the park without fear of it be vandalised and local residents can feel safe at night."
