Thug who murdered his friend dies behind bars at Lanarkshire jail

A vicious thug who murdered his friend in a savage attack has died behind bars at a Lanarkshire jail.

Darrin Callander punched, kicked and stamped on frail pal Brian “Tucker” Scott and left him to die at a property in Dumfries in April 2013.

Now the 49-year-old killer has died while serving a life sentence at HMP Shotts.

An inquiry will be held into the circumstances of his death at a later stage.

Callander was jailed for a minimum of 14-and-a-half years after admitting murdering Brian, 54 at an address in the town.

Brian suffered injuries including smashed ribs, a ruptured spleen, fractured vertebrae and brain damage. They had been caused by kicks, punches and stamping.

The Scottish Prison Service confirmed Callander died on September 18.

A statement said: “Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal. A fatal accident inquiry will be held in due course.”
