Thug who bought £4m scratchcard with stolen bank card jailed for headbutting girlfriend

A thug who used a stolen bank card to buy a £4million winning scratchcard has been jailed for headbutting his girlfriend and attempting to pay her off with his "winnings".

Mark Goodram, 37, and his pal Jon-Ross Watson, 31, hit the headlines last year after claiming the top prize on a £10 scratchcard.

However Camelot - the operator of the UK National Lottery - refused to pay out when officials discovered the debit card used to make the purchase did not belong to either of them.

Only months after the supposed win, Goodram viciously attacked his now ex partner.

He headbutted the woman - who has not been named - so hard that paramedics could see her frontal bone.

Goodram then offered her cash from his supposed winnings if she told police she had fallen, Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard.

In a hearing held over Skype this week the defendant, who has a string of previous convictions, was sentenced to 25 months in prison.

The court heard Goodram and his victim had been dating for a few months at the time the attack in the early hours of September 26, 2019.

They had been drinking with friends the previous night and were in the street alone when an argument started.

Prosecutor Daniel Calder said Goodram called the woman a "slag" before headbutting her once to the face.

The offender was arrested and remanded in custody, but continued to bombard his victim with letters and phone calls as he was trying to get her to lie to the police, Mr Calder told the court.

He said: "In these communications he asked her to tell the police that she had been drunk and had fallen over.

"He also asked her to not attend court to give evidence. He told her that he had enjoyed a large lottery win and would 'look after her'.

"He also warned her that she would 'get done' for assaulting him if she attended court."

The woman did not respond to him and Goodram, after initially denying attacking her, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Hugh Barton, defending, stressed that Goodram and his partner had been heavily intoxicated at the time of the attack, but he accepted he had headbutted her.

He added that Goodram has been diagnosed with anxiety and depression and has had a "long struggle with substance misuse".

"He has expressed remorse. His actions that night were out of character," he said.

As well as a custodial sentenced Judge Graeme Smith also handed Goodram a restraining order banning him from contacting the victim.
