Thug's foul-mouthed outburst at judge as he's jailed for killing pensioner

A burglar who killed an 84-year-old woman in her own home while she fetched him water launched a foul-mouthed outburst as a judge jailed him for for more than 20 years.

Johnny Brazil left frail Joyce Burgess with tears in her skin, "covered in blood" and with "severe and extensive bruising" after she tried to stop him snatching her handbag containing just £60.

The 27-year-old had walked through her open door on a hot day on July 7 last year after prowling the area of Loop Road, Woking, Surrey, targeting vulnerable pensioners' homes.

Brazil told judge Jonathan Black to "f*** your mum's c***" and stormed from the dock as he was handed an extended sentence of 23 years and three months on Friday at Guildford Crown Court.

The judge said: "You're a man who preys on the elderly, you break into or gain entry into their homes by subterfuge.

"You then steal handbags or jewellery using force, if necessary, against your victims.

"Having gained entry to her house by subterfuge by asking for a glass of water you used force against her to steal her handbag and its contents.

"The force you used was substantial.

"When police arrived they found her bleeding heavily from five sites."

Brazil, who wore a white T shirt, with a tattoo reading "mum" visible on his left arm, was given a custodial sentence of 20 years and three months with an extended licence period of three years.

He pleaded guilty to the manslaughter and robbery of Ms Burgess in June after previously admitting a further charge of robbery, three counts of burglary, attempted burglary, possessing a lock knife and damaging property.

The extended sentence given for the most serious offence of manslaughter was to "reflect the criminality" of the other offences, the judge said.
