Thug 'legs it' after spitting and swearing at police...but is foiled by his own stupidity

A thug who spat and swore at police then tried to flee the scene faced swift justice tonight - after he ran straight into a sheet of glass.

The incident happened on Parker Street in Manchester city centre on Tuesday evening, police said.

The 29-year-old man abused officers 'then went to leg it', GMP's city centre team said in a tweet.

Unfortunately for him, he ran straight into a sheet of glass at a bus stop.

A picture posted by GMP showed the glass completely shattered.

The offender suffered only 'minor cuts' and required first aid, police said.

He has now been arrested and will be having 'tea and biscuits with the custody Sgt'.

Police have been subjected to a number of vile spitting incidents since the pandemic began.

Earlier today, Shaun Sleigh, 31, was jailed for eight months and ordered to pay compensation after he assaulted a female officer and threatened to spit at her claiming he had Covid-19 at an address in Walkden, Salford.

Police chiefs said the sentence should serve as a warning that this kind of behaviour would not be tolerated as the country tackles the pandemic.

Describing tonight's incident, GMP City Centre tweeted: "A 29 year old male decided to spit & swear at our officers on Parker Street this evening.

"He then went to leg it.... But ran through a sheet of glass at one of the bus stops. Minor cuts, some first aid - then tea and biscuits - with the custody Sgt for this gent."
