Thug left nightclub to buy knife from Asda before returning by taxi to stab stranger

A thug who left a nightclub to buy a knife from a 24-hour supermarket before repeatedly stabbing a stranger with it is behind bars.

John Foy, 21, was on a night out with his friends when a disturbance broke out between them and another group.

A raging Foy flagged down a taxi and was driven to a nearby branch of Asda where he bought a chopping board accompanied with a selection of knives in the early hours.

He was caught on CCTV buying the board through the self-scanners and walking back to the taxi.

Foy told the driver to take him back to Hype nightclub in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, and he got out armed with one of the blades and returned to the crowds outside.

He snarled 'what one of you is wanting it' before repeatedly stabbing Connor Holden, 25, on his body.

Foy cornered him in a shop doorway with the knife which was covered in Mr Holden's DNA and he was arrested.

The victim was left with a wound on his torso and also had wounds to his arms and buttocks but made a full recovery despite being scarred for life.

First offender Foy, of Bellshill, near Glasgow, has now appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted assault to severe injury and permanent disfigurement as well as possessing the blade in June last year.

Depute fiscal Neil Thomson said: "CCTV shows the accused leaving the environs of the nightclub, getting into a taxi and instructing the taxi driver to go to a branch of Asda which is nearby.

"He goes in and buys a chopping board which is packaged with a number of knives.

"The accused leaves Asda in possession of the chopping board which is wrapped in cellophane and a number of knives and directs the driver to return to the area of the nightclub.

"While in the taxi he removes one of the knives from the package.

"Having now taken possession of the knife, the accused makes his way over to a group of people who are outside the nightclub and that group included the complainer Mr Holden.

"The accused goes and barges into the group of people while saying 'what one of you is wanting it' and at that point begins to strike Mr Holden on the body with the knife.

"There is a striking, stabbing motion causing a lot of injuries.

"Following this exchange, security outside the nightclub realise something is ongoing and see the accused move away quickly and suspect his involvement in something.

"The security guards catch up with the accused and confront him leading to a stand off between parties culminating in the accused being detained in a shop doorway.

"They note he is still in possession of a knife and that knife has blood staining on it which forensic examination confirms as blood from Mr Holden's DNA."

The court heard a scar to Mr Holden's abdomen will be across his body for life and that it was a 'very significant' injury.

Laura Kiernan, defending, said: "His position is that he was attacked and that led to him being on the ground and two of the complainer's group were kicking at him on the head and he sustained injury from that.

"It is quite clear that this is the precursor to this incident.

"A lot of drink had been taken and in a moment of madness he acted in the way narrated.

"It does seem deliberate but only deliberate to someone not thinking clearly at all to go and get this, he thought it was a good idea but he regrets it and it has caused him significant stress."

Sheriff Douglas Brown deferred sentence on Foy until next month for reports and remanded him in custody.

Not guilty pleas to charges of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner and possessing cocaine were accepted by prosecutors.
