Thug jailed for 'plunging' scissors into victim in East Kilbride street attack

A man has been jailed for two years and three months after a stabbing in an East Kilbride street in broad daylight.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard Colin Smith used a pair of scissors to attack James Park, known as Fudge, in Maxwell Drive on June 9.

The victim suffered a 6cm deep wound to his stomach, but fortunately no vital organs were damaged.

He required several stitches to close the wound.

Smith, 45, a prisoner, admitted assaulting Mr Park with an unknown sharp weapon to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

The court heard Smith had been looking for Mr Park about 7pm.

He was told Mr Park was in Montgomery Street and it was suggested he could walk there to meet him.

However, fiscal Jennifer Guy said Smith replied there were “too many cameras” in that area.

Later, the pair met up in Maxwell Drive. A witness thought Smith had a knife hidden in his sleeve and shouted a warning to Mr Park, but it was too late.

Smith was seen running on to the road and getting into a 4x4-type vehicle which was driven off by someone else.

Mr Park had blood seeping through his t-shirt and told witnesses Park had just “plunged” him.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said Mr Park has a “reputation for violence” and had threatened Smith.

Mr Bruce added: “My client wanted to placate him, but Mr Park became aggressive and my client believed he would be attacked.

“He says he had a pair of scissors with him, not a knife.”

The court was told dad of five Smith also ended up in hospital that night with a seizure.

Mr Bruce said he has since being diagnosed as having epilepsy.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Thomas Millar pointed out that Smith has convictions for assaults and the use and possession of knives.

Custody was “inevitable”, but given his guilty plea the sentence would be reduced from three years to 27 months, backdated to June 27.
