Thug choked his ill mum and attacked his sister in early morning row

An angry thug who choked his ill mother and attacked his sister in an early morning row was jailed for 27 months yesterday.

Michael Coyle pounced on mum Maureen, 57, and sibling Stacey Coyle, 36, at their home in Rutherglen last November.

Coyle, 30, became enraged when his mother ordered him back into the house as he was standing outside ranting.

Stacey suffered bruised ribs in the violent attack by Coyle.

His mother, who has COPD and breathing problems, attempted to intervene but was punched and choked by Coyle.

He pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting his sister to her severe injury.

He also admitted assaulting his mother to her severe injury, permanent disfigurement, permanent impairment and possession of a knife.

Sheriff Johanna Johnston QC told Coyle that it was a “shocking offence.”

She said: “You got yourself into a situation where you clearly lost control, and if you didn’t know what you were doing that’s worse.

“The injuries to your mother and sister were difficult for them.

“Your mother has a very difficult condition, you restricted her breathing and this must bring you shame.”

The court heard Coyle was “shouting and screaming” outside his mother's house at 3.30am. She told him to get inside the house and this sparked a row.

Coyle got into an altercation with Stacey and pushed her onto the kitchen table which caused her to fall.

Prosecutor Claire Wallace said: “He kicked her to the ribs and back.

“Their mum attempted to separate them and Coyle punched her on the mouth causing immediate pain to her upper teeth and gums.

“He pushed her onto the couch and started choking her pressing his hand around her throat and covering her mouth.”

It was revealed that Miss Coyle suffers from COPD and has “breathing difficulties.”

Stacey tried to aid her mum but she was punched and kicked by her brother who screamed in her face. Coyle then armed himself with a black handled kitchen knife, before leaving the house.

A 999 call was made and the injured pair were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Stacey had bruised ribs and required no further treatment. Miss Coyle was referred to a dentist and is still described as being in “a lot of pain.”

Police later tracked down the dad of two who was arrested.
