Thug in cheesecake factory roof stand off with police shot at house

A gun thug shot at a house and then was involved in a bizarre cheesecake factory roof "stand-off" days later.

Michael O’Grady was behind a bullet being discharged at a property on Culme Road, West Derby, on Halloween morning.

Police officers arrived at the scene at 11.45am, on October 31, last year, and found damage to the address.

Six days later, a large area around Greenbank Road and Smithdown Road was cordoned off following reports of a man on the roof of Dafna's cheesecake factory and the Opal Rooms beauty salon.

It later emerged the man, who s pent a number of hours on the roof refusing to come down, was O'Grady.

He had tried to flee through a skylight when police arrived at this home to arrest him for the shooting in West Derby.

A series of roads were sealed off, and traffic was unable to travel down the major route of Smithdown Road in south Liverpool as O'Grady refused to climb down.

He remained there between 10.30am-1pm, on Novermber 6, and could be seen sitting and walking along the roof above Dafna's cheesecake factory.

Eventually he was arrested.

Today, O'Grady was jailed for ten years at Liverpool Crown Court.

The 27-year-old, of Moscow Drive, Tuebrook, was found guilty of possession of a firearm without a certificate; possession of ammunition without a certificate; possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence; criminal damage to a building; driving whilst disqualified; driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Smith, of Merseyside Police, said: “We are pleased that O’Grady has rightly been jailed for a significant amount of time today following a shooting in West Derby last year.

“The use of firearms can have serious consequences, not just for victims and their families, but perpetrators too.

"O’Grady is clearly a dangerous individual whose reckless behaviour and use of weapons has resulted in him being brought to justice, and I hope this serves as a stark warning to anyone involved in serious and organised crime that we will pursue you and put you before the courts.

“Firearms blight local communities with misery and fear, but I want to make it incredibly clear that we will not tolerate gun crime, and will continue work tirelessly to not only target those involved, but work together with partners and educate young people on the devastation they can cause."

Footage handed to the ECHO show police putting the man in the back of the van following the stand-off on Smithdown Road.

Officers had entered the flat in Greenbank to make enquiries in connection with the shooting, gaining entry via the disused Fat Flamingo bar front door, but it prompted the suspect to flee onto the roof.

Staff in the businesses in Greenbank were told to stay indoors, keep windows closed and stay away from the walls in case items were hurled down from the roof.
