Thug launched sickening attack... just yards away from terrified child

A man has been jailed after attacking a dad in the street, yards away from the victim's nine-year-old stepson.

The victim was left with wounds to his face and shoulder and also had to have a tooth removed following the assault on October 20 2018, Bolton Crown Court heard.

Yakub Thompson then failed to show up to court in 2019, prosecution barrister Alison Heyworth explained.

At 11am on the day of the incident, the victim had been driving from Leigh to Bolton and noticed Thompson 'staggering from side to side' in St Helens Road.

The man, who had his partner and stepson in the car, slowed down but Thompson, then aged 25, walked up to the car and shouted: "F***ing hell, you nearly ran me over."

Another man, named Daniel Lee, then shouted: "Who the f*** is this?"

Lee held a broken bottle to the victim's neck, through the open car window, and the man wound down the back windows to show that there was a child in the car.

Thompson tried to calm Lee down but he was 'undeterred', Ms Heyworth said.

The victim got out of his car to move the confrontation away from the child and he was hit by Lee and then Thompson, before both men ran away.

The man realised he was cut to the face and he was helped by passers by, before being taken to hospital with a 5cm laceration to his cheekbone, a laceration to his shoulder and a dislodged tooth.

He was stitched up and had the tooth removed, the court heard.

In a victim impact statement, the man said that the attack had made him lose confidence and impacted negatively on his job and relationship.

He added: "I'm not going to be able to see my son, who is five, until my face is healed because it will upset him.

"My stepson had to see me covered in blood and was hysterical about what happened."

The victim has been left with a permanent scar and said that he has PTSD.

Lee, of Longfield Road, Deane was jailed for two-and-half years in January 2020, after pleading guilty to the attack and separate robbery.

Thompson, of Bolton Road, Westhoughton, did not show up to court in the summer of 2019, which has led to the delay in his sentencing.

He eventually pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding at a pre-trial review hearing.

Defence barrister Paul Treble told the court: "He seemed to be at liberty at the time. He is a very different person then but has to accept some of delay is his own making."

Mr Treble said that Thompson has recently been released from prison for an unrelated matter and has turned his life around since his release.

He has reconnected with his six-year-old daughter and has got back into a relationship with the girl's mother.

Mr Treble also told the court that Thompson has recently been offered a job and that custody would put him 'back at square one'.

"He will do anything to keep his liberty and remain a good father," he said.

Judge Tom Gilbart described the victim's injuries as attack as 'horrifying' and 'sickening'.

He said: "I accept that you have made changes to your life. I accept that you have matured. I accept that you are motivated to be there for your child.

"It is always a sadness when the parent of a young child finds themselves in the dock of a criminal court. It is of course, entirely your responsibility that you sit there.

"I accept that there is a realistic prospect of rehabilitation and strong personal mitigation. I also accept that immediate custody would result in a significant impact on others.

"You have made real progress since your last custodial spell and an immediate custodial term would undo some of that progress."

Jailing Thompson, now aged 28, for 14 months., Judge Gilbart added: "The victim of this assault, his then-partner and the child were entirely innocent parties in what happened.

"You were part of an unpleasant attack which resulted in a quite horrifying facial injury and that attack was carried out in the presence of a young child - left crying and screaming in the car.

"Even allowing for the significant personal mitigation in this case, appropriate punishment can only be achieved by immediate custody."
