Thug got into drunken row with pal before stabbing him for 'being mouthy' - he can't even remember doing it

A man stabbed his best friend four times with a kitchen knife following a booze-fuelled bust-up.

Lee Gargan, 37, dialled 999 after knifing his pal.

"I've stabbed him, he's my best friend," he told the call handler.

Gargan, a former road builder, was high on a cocktail of drink and drugs during the scrap, on March 31 last year. He said he couldn't remember the incident.

Manchester Crown Court heard that shortly after 10pm, Gargan rang emergency services saying he believed he had stabbed his best friend to death.

Gargan was sentenced for 18 months at Manchester Crown Court (MEN Media)

It is believed the pair, who were also housemates, were intoxicated and following an argument, Gargan picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed him four times.

Prosecutor David Lees told the court Gargan told the call handler he had stabbed his friend 'all over the place'.

"He told police he had stabbed his friend because he had been mouthy," Mr Lees said.

Three 'drunk' men were refused drink at pub and were chucked out by locals - so they launched a machete attack

Our investigation into Manchester's 'hidden homeless' crisis sparked real change - this is why it was so important

"Police and ambulance attended the address and a small blue handled kitchen knife was recovered from the scene.

"The victim was found lying on the sofa and was taken to hospital with a number of wound including a 4cm stab wound to the arm.

"His injuries required a number of stitches and he was discharged from hospital the next day," Mr Lees added.

The court heard Gargan, of Mark Avenue, Salford, has a number of previous convictions, including for attacking an ex-partner with a dumbbell.

Gargan's lawyer, Robin Kitching, said his client's offending was set against a backdrop of alcohol dependency.

"It is clear that intoxication was a catalyst for what took place," he told the court.

"It may also be the intoxication that lead to a lack of memory of what happened during the night in question.

"Most of his previous convictions are due to his alcohol dependency. He has not surrendered to his alcohol problem and is not winning that battle.

"I think if he could remember the incident he would certainly feel remorse for what happened," Mr Kitching added.

Judge Suzanne Goddard QC jailed Gargan for 18 months after he pleaded guilty to an offence of Section 20 wounding.

Sentencing, Judge Goddard said: "This was a serious incident indeed. It was a serious weapon and you are lucky that much more serious injuries were not caused.

"Sadly, the court sees far too many murder and manslaughter charges which occur from incidents such as these.

"It is very clear that looking through your record you are someone who has been battling with alcohol for quite some time.

"In my view only a custodial sentence is appropriate to address the risk to those close to you when you have a knife in your hand and you are drinking."

Gargan will serve half his sentence before being considered for release.
