Thug brutally attacked his lover who tried to stop him driving after drunken argument

A shocked thug asked a court officer if he 'got the jail' after being sentenced to two years for brutally attacking his lover.

Steffan Cassidy, 29, turned on Marina Murray at her home in Glasgow's Oatlands on August 6, 2021. The hospital porter struck after Miss Murray tried to stop him driving following a drunken argument.

Cassidy, of Livingston, West Lothian, got on top of Miss Murray and choked her before biting her on the face. The victim was left with a permanent wound to her scalp.

Cassidy pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Miss Murray to her severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

Sheriff Tony Kelly told him: "In relation to the circumstances before me, there is nothing to justify your conduct.

"This was a sick attack on a vulnerable person which resulted in an injury that she will have for the rest of her life. There is no other sentence available other than a period of imprisonment."

As the security officer went to cuff Cassidy he asked: "Am I getting the jail?"

He was heard to say: "F***" as the red-faced thug was led to the cells.

The court earlier heard that Cassidy and Miss Murray were in a relationship for a year. A drunken argument took place and he was asked to leave.

Cassidy attempted to get into his car but was tailed by Miss Murray who told him he couldn't drive. The 10-minute argument resulted in Cassidy taking hold of Miss Murray's shoulders and throwing her to the ground.

Prosecutor Lauran Sangray said: "Cassidy sat on top of her and grabbed her shoulders and shook her."

He ignored Miss Murray's pleas to stop as a witness dialled 999. He put his hands round her throat as she struggled to breath before he bit her twice on the face.

Miss Murray's face was seen to be covered in blood as she slipped down the body of the car.

She was later taken to hospital for treatment to a wound to the back of her head which required to be stapled shut.

Miss Sangray added: "She has been left with bald patches on her hair line."

Cassidy was later traced and arrested.

John Kilcoyne, defending, told the court that Cassidy had received a text message from another female that day.

The lawyer added: "He works as a porter at St John's in Livingston and they are aware of this case - Disclose Scotland has made them aware.

"He is not allowed to change patients at the moment.

"He was intoxicated on the day of the offence and accepts that his behaviour was despicable. Mr Cassidy lost his temper due to heavy drink of alcohol."

It was revealed Cassidy has one previous conviction for assault from outside his school at age 16.

A five-year non-harassment order was also granted prohibiting Cassidy's contact with Miss Murray.
