Thug batters gay couple and leaves mum bloodied in 'unprovoked' attack

A thug attacked a gay couple and punched a mother in the face in a "completely unprovoked" attack outside a city centre restaurant.

Shocking CCTV shows Philip Sexton punching the young couple, who were smoking and minding their own business outside Gino D'Acampo My Restaurant in Leeds.

Sarah Liversidge intervened to help her son and his boyfriend, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, but Sexton, 54, smashed her in the face - leaving her with a bloody nose - and grabbed her by the hair as she walked away, LeedsLive reports.

But Sexton has avoided jail for the January 25 attack, which has left the traumatised couple "nervous" about going out and the victims and their families vowing to never to return to Leeds.

Ross Liversidge, from Worcestershire, ran out of the restaurant when he heard his wife screaming during the attack.

He said: "It really shocked us, they were just stood there chatting and having a cigarette.

"It was completely unprovoked and nasty.

"He pushed my wife out of the way, and then went for the boys.

"He also hit the waitress with a haymaker when she intervened.

"Her nose was bruised and her face was covered in blood, but she was still giving him some stick."

Mr Liversidge told how the victims have been left traumatised.

He said: "The assault has had a huge effect on all three victims.

"We are not from Leeds and will never return.

"We were there to celebrate one of the boys' birthdays and meet his parents for the first time.

"What should have been a really happy event ended in violence and upset.

He added: "It's been a horrific time for us.

"The boys have found that the attack has completely changed them and they are nervous about going out."

Sexton admitted four charges of assault by beating when he appeared at Leeds' Magistrates Court and on Wednesday.

He was given a 12-month community order and ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.
