Thug battered girlfriend so savagely she was left wetting bed and unable to sleep

A man attacked his girlfriend so savagely she was left wetting the bed and unable to sleep.

During a frenzied attack, David Daly repeatedly punched his ex.

The town's sheriff court heard how he pinned her down on their bed and rained blows onto her face.

The attack, which Daly, 36, has now been jailed for, resulted in the end of their nine-month relationship.

Procurator Fiscal Depute Maureen McGovern told the court the attack took place on Thursday, August 15 this year.

The prosecutor explained: "At around 7pm the accused left and he returned about 10pm and was clearly intoxicated.

"She was angry and did not want to let the accused in to the house.

"A struggle ensued between them and they ended up arguing.

"He became increasingly aggressive towards her and, as a result, her mum woke up.

"He climbed on top of the victim, pinning her to the bed, with some considerable force, causing injury, and repeatedly punched her on the face three or four times.

"She was crying out loud for her mother."

Her mum ran through to the bedroom and tried to stop the attack, trying to hit Daly and pull him off her daughter.

Miss McGovern added: "This caused the accused to loosen his grip and allowed the victim to try and defend herself by scratching him to the right side of his neck."

The police were contacted and the victim chased after Daly, who had ran from the property.

When police officers raced to the scene, the "distressed and crying" woman revealed what had happened and pointed Daly out to them and he was taken in to police custody.

Miss McGovern added: "She has been attending at her doctors as she has been bedwetting and has been prescribed anti-depressant medication and sleeping pills following this attack."

Daly pleaded guilty over the attack when he appeared in the dock this week, admitting pinning her to the bed and raining punches on her head in exchange for prosecutors dropping claims he strangled her and bit her nose.

Defence solicitor Charlie McCusker said Daly had gone to the pub with a female neighbour after heading to the shop on the night in question.

And he said his client "had to push her away on several occasions to stop her hitting him" and had been scratched before he lashed out.

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew pointed out Daly has four previous convictions for violence from his native England - and said he was lucky he was being prosecuted in a way where 12 months in jail was the maximum sentence available.

He then told Daly: "You have a number of convictions for battery, and one for wounding and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

"Whatever the provocation - you clearly went well beyond that.

"There can only be one disposal today."

He jailed Daly for nine months, reduced from 10 as he admitted his guilt, backdating the sentence to August 15, when he was first remanded in custody.

And he made him the subject of a three-year-long Non-Harassment Order, which sees him banned from approaching or contacting the victim in any way for that period of time.
