Pensioner, 81, left bleeding and bruised after being battered by thug in Renfrew street attack

An 81-year-old man needed hospital treatment after being battered in an unprovoked street attack.

A violent brute targeted the pensioner in Renfrew’s Britannia Way, leaving his face bloodied and bruised.

He threw the OAP to the ground before laying into him during the sickening assault, which happened around 10.20pm.

The thug then turned on a Good Samaritan who tried to save the elderly man from the senseless beating.

The 28-year-old man also suffered injuries.

Police raced to the scene to help the stricken pensioner before he was taken to Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment.

It is understood his wounds are not serious but he has been left very badly shaken by his ordeal.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police were called to reports of an elderly male having been assaulted in Britannia Way, Renfrew, around 10.20pm on Friday, July 31. An 81-year-old man was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment for facial injuries. A 28-year-old man was also assaulted during the same alleged incident.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said a 27-year-old man had been arrested and charged with assault.
