Throwback Thurday: Memories of the Stuart Hotel

It has been over six years now since The Stuart Hotel was sadly demolished.

The building had fell into disuse after being closed down a number of years prior.

In its heyday, with its grand ballroom and ‘posh’ cocktail bar, the Stuart Hotel was one of the country’s most popular wedding and social venues.

The first new hotel in the town was opened by Scottish and Newcastle Brewers in 1959.

The hotel continued to be a favourite for years to come, and its 'sunken garden' was enjoyed by many in East Kilbride.

For former hotel wedding photographer, Colin Maclean, his greatest memory of the place will forever hold a special place in his heart.

The 59-year-old widower from St Leonards celebrated his marriage to sweetheart Pauline there on January 10, 1976 – three years after the couple met in the old Olympia Ballroom.

Pauline sadly died from breast cancer in December 2005, just one month short of their 30th anniversary.

The hotel celebrated hundreds of weddings over the years.

After many years of the hotel being derelict, a decision was finally made to pull down the building as it was classed as unsafe.
