Through thick and thin: readers' photos and drawings of their families - in pictures

bohemian rhapsody family portrait
Family portrait: One of the very few photos we have of all four of our family. Reminds me of the cover of Bohemian Rhapsody ...

ww1 army picture with a dog
First world war army picture: One of these men is a great uncle. I’m afraid I do not know the year it was taken nor where

ten year old drawing of his grandmother
A drawing of his grandmother by my grandson David, aged 10: A very cruel, but accurate (sorry Jane!) representation. He is very observant. May I immodestly suggest he takes after me? And of course his mother!

family holiday photo
Call this a HOLIDAY?! This picture was taken 40+ years ago at Lunan Bay in Scotland. My mum would spend the whole of the school holidays there but my dad was only able to join us for two weeks. This picture sums up SO many things – my poor mother’s expression my sisters and I’s personalities. I’m at the back with a shy smile ... my younger sister is sat confidently at the front sticking her tongue out and my youngest sister is displaying her unique sense of style with her head coyly tilted. Oh and my brother ... he’s making the most noise!!

photo of three norwegian american boys in gowns
My great aunt, grandmother (centre) and great uncle in 1895: Norwegian American boys at least in the Dakota Territory wore gowns until about four years old. Their first trousers were donned with pride

four men in suits celebrating a friend's wedding
My dad (top): This is him with his nephews and a friend, shortly after they arrived in the UK from Jamaica. I expect they had shots of rum in those glasses, as they were celebrating a friend’s wedding. They all had Brylcreamed hair and very smart suits

painting two children and a dog
Julian, Natasha and Tatjana, the family dog: A painting of my grandchildren in oil. The idea came from an old photograph of them taken in California after they had been picking giant lilies from the garden. The scene suggested innocence and love. How they adored each other and the dog!

sketch of someone's daughter wearing a hat
My daughter, Zena: I did this drawing of my daughter when she was about 14. I think it captures a moment in her life when she was developing her sense of who she wanted to be and how she projected that to the wider world

photo of grandmother and granddaughter
Grannie and granddaughter: My mother, Anna, aged 91 and living in a dementia care home, with one of my daughters, Sarah, aged 22 and about to go travelling

a old soldier reflects
The old soldier reflects: Taken by his grandson in 1970, Charlie reflects. He was sent underage in 1915 with the Gloucesters to the front and was almost immediately captured. In 1919 he returned to Bristol to his mother (who thought he was dead) and no work. Finally the British Legion found him a place in the Police Service in the Forest of Dean. On retirement he moved to a small council flat opposite GCHQ in Cheltenham where this picture was taken, where he lived alone – his wife having died several years earlier

great grandmother holding a baby
Third great grandchild: My mum turned 83 last November, and she held her third great grandchild in her arms only two days ago!

woman holding a painting of her granddaughter
My painting of my granddaughter: I gave her this portrait for Christmas when she was two years old
