Thrill-seekers could be able to climb 330ft Forth Bridge in new plans

Hopes have soared for Sydney Harbour Bridge-style climbs of the Forth Bridge.

Thrill-seekers with a head for heights will be able to go forth and conquer “one of Scotland’s most loved and iconic structures”.

Being on top of the 100m-high towers has been likened to “walking in the sky” and an “experience of a lifetime.”

About 80,000 people a year are expected to sample the Forth Bridge Experience, according to plans dusted off after six years.

Network Rail want planning approval for a centre at the south end, where visitors would be led on to the 129-year-old crossing.

Documents lodged with Edinburgh City Council planning chiefs state: “Accompanied by a guide, groups of around 15 walkers will then exit on to the roof of the building to climb up a ramp to an upper level and then on to the bridge itself.”

The sky-high strollers will reach a platform at the top, 367ft above the water.

Network Rail Scotland’s Alan Ross said: “There is real appetite to take these plans forward.”
