Easy Tesco trick helps thrifty mum halve her Christmas food shopping bill

A mum has worked out how to halve the cost of her weekly Tesco shop - and has shared how shoppers can save up points to help with Christmas 2022.

Super saver Sophie Hyden opened up about her approach on Facebook on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group.

She said the first step is to sign up for the Tesco clubcard.

Then you must sign into your Tesco account on your browser, not the Tesco app.

From there, click on the section of the website about the Tesco voucher scheme.

On that part of the website you can change the event you save for to 'Christmas saver'.

This means any vouchers you collect are uploaded to the Tesco app next November, in time for the costly Christmas period.

The trick will work for all Tesco stores (PA)

Doing it this year halved her Christmas shopping bill from £112.38 to £63.33.

Hyden said: "You never know what your circumstance will be any year at Christmas and having this may ease some families worries about food/presents.''

There were more than five thousand other Facebook users applauding the advice.

One said: "I do this, I save all year for Christmas. I’ve already clocked up £8.50 towards next Christmas, it helps so much with the Xmas bits and pieces such as tubs of chocolate stocking fillers."

Another said: "I save my points to use at Christmas and save on my card too, spent nearly £200 Wednesday and it cost me £49 - I was so pleased."

Last week The Mirror reported how a mum saved an impressive £2,340 on food during lockdown by using a clever app.

Sarah Colley, 41, a married mum-of-one and head of finance for a menswear retailer, started to use the Too Good to Go app during the pandemic.

Too Good To Go partners up with retailers including Greggs, Marks and Spencer and Costa - as well as smaller, independent shops - to sell “magic bags” of food that would otherwise be thrown out at the end of the day.

Prices start from around £3 for a bag - and Sarah says she has been able to get full boxes of food worth £50 for just £3.09.

The only downside is you can’t choose what food you get in your Too Good To Go bag.

Sarah estimates she has saved an average of £30 per month during lockdown.

Sarah, who lives in Scarborough, told LatestDeals.co.uk she was “dubious” at first about Too Good To Go but decided to try it out.

But she estimates that she saved on average about £30 a week over lockdown - so over 18 months, that would roughly be a saving of about £2,340.

"I bought my first bag from a local One Stop Store and went to pick it up at 9:15pm,” she said.

“It was a carrier bag full of random items, such as sandwiches, crisps, fruit, cakes all dated that day. It was worth the £3.09 I had paid."
