Police were called to the Greenfields home after the child's parents reported him missing.  (ABC News: Briana Shepherd)

A three-year-old boy has drowned in a pool at a home south of Perth this afternoon.

Police were initially called to the house in Greenfields, near Mandurah, when the boy was reported missing by his parents.

They'd been preparing to search the area, but he was found in the pool a short time later.

A St John Ambulance spokesperson said paramedics were called to the home at 2:05pm, with two crews sent to the scene arriving within five minutes.

Forensics investigators are at the home tonight.

Police say the death is not suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Of those, eight drowned in swimming pools, making it the most common location for drownings in that age group.

That made up almost a third of all drownings in swimming pools across the country last year.

A total of 39 people drowned in WA in the same period, up 22 per cent from the year before.

Royal Life Saving said seven of those who drowned in WA did so in swimming pools.
