Three-year-old boy taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car in Washington

A three-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car in Washington.

Emergency services were called to Heworth Road, in Washington, shortly after 5.15pm on Sunday afternoon after receiving a report of a collision between an Audi A3 and a three-year-old boy.

Northumbria Police closed the road while the child received treatment and officers carried out enquiries.

Witnesses from the scene said an air ambulance landed nearby to the scene while the road was closed.

Officers are now appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Just after 5.15pm on Sunday we received a report of a collision between an Audi A3 and a three-year-old boy on Heworth Road in Washington.

"Emergency services attended and the child was taken to hospital with a serious leg injury.

"The road was closed for a period of time to ensure the child could receive treatment and for officers to carry out enquiries.

"An investigation into the circumstances around the collision are ongoing and anyone who witnessed what happened is asked to call police on 101 quoting log 857 06/06/21."
