Three-year-old boy seriously injured in hit and run in induced coma in Temple Street Hospital

The dad of a three-year-old who was knocked down in Cork on Monday afternoon has said he is doing well after being transferred to Dublin.

Paul Higgins' son Zac was hit by a car yesterday at 4pm on Skehard Road and was left with serious injuries.

The driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene and their vehicle was found a short distance away from where the incident happened.

Zac, 3, was rushed to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries and has since been transferred to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin.

In a Facebook post, Paul said: "I would like to thank everyone who sent well wishes today ,After the longest 4 hours in the CUH our little warrior hit the road to Dublin by ambulance.

"He will love that when he wakes to hear it. He arrived at temple street hospital straight for CT scan which showed good results so far.

"To see your child that way is the worst feeling I every had in my life today .

"Special thanks to all our friends in Castle Meadows who went above and beyond."

Gardai are investigating the shocking incident and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardai at Anglesea Street in Cork investigating a hit and run collision in Cork City yesterday, Monday March 25th 2019 have recovered a blue saloon car believed to have been involved in his incident.

"The car was recovered approximately 1 km from the scene of the collision.

"The injured boy is described as critical but stable at Temple Street Children’s University Hospital in Dublin.

"Shortly before 4pm a 3-year-old boy was stuck by a car at Castle Meadows off Skehard Road.

"The car involved failed to remain at the scene. The young boy was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital. His condition is understood to be serious.

"No arrests have been made and investigating Gardaí are continuing to appeal for information.

"The scene of the incident was preserved and is currently being examined by Garda forensic collision investigators.

"Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them. They are particularly appealing to motorists with dash cams who were driving in the Skehard Road and Castle Meadows area between 3:30pm and 4:30pm to contact them.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station 021 4522000 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111."
