Three vehicle Knowsley Expressway smash sparks major tailbacks

Motorists were facing major tailbacks this morning after a three-car crash on the Knowsley Expressway.

The crash which happened just after 6.30am brought traffic to a standstill and continues to cause delays this morning.

Merseyside Police said three vehicles including a black Volkswagen car were involved in the accident, close to the M57 J1 Tarbock Island and one of the cars had ended up in the central reservation.

However a spokesman said: "Closures are in place but nobody is believed to have been seriously injured. "

He added that North West Motorway Police were leading the response.

And North West Motorway Police tweeted that although recovery vehicles were being sent to the scene, motorists should brace themselves for traffic delays.

The tweet around 7.30am warned: "RTC on the A5300, Knowsley Expressway, northbound carriageway, we are in the process of getting recovery trucks to the scene but there are tail backs."
