Three thousand inspections take place of headstones in Perth and Kinross as part of safety programme

Perth and Kinross Council has completed 3000 inspections of headstones in the region as part of a project to make cemeteries safer.

Subsequently officers have fixed around 700 headstones so they no longer pose a threat to the public.

The work has been carried out as part of PKC’s headstone stabilisation programme.

Executive director of housing and communities Barbara Renton provided a recent update to councillors at a meeting of the environment and infrastructure committee on October 28.

The cemeteries where stabilisation work has been completed include Blair Atholl, Tibbermore, Greyfriars and Kinnoull Cemeteries.

Ms Renton said they were making “good progress” at Jeanfield Cemetery.

She added: “That was despite significant damage at Jeanfield as the flooding in August knocked down around 40 metres of wall and submerged over 100 headstones.

“And collectively our bereavement services, property services and external partners have worked very hard to minimise - which is a very understandable - upset felt by families, visitors and householders affected by that flooding.”

A Muslim burial ground extension at Jeanfield Cemetery has also been completed and had its first interment which Ms Renton said had brought positive feedback from the Muslim community.
