Three things we learned from Tottenham loss as reality hits for Thomas Frank and Xavi Simons importance clear

Thomas Frank is quickly getting the full experience of the Tottenham rollercoaster.

The opinion of Spurs fans towards the transfer window has swung from satisfaction, to anger, to jubilation at the signing of Xavi Simons on Friday.

The feeling towards matters on the pitch has been overwhelmingly positive, after wins over Burnley and Manchester City, but that came to a grinding halt here.

Bournemouth were 1-0 winners in north London but could have scored three or four. Spurs mounted something of a late charge in the final ten minutes - until that point they had offered next to nothing in attack.

Victory would have moved Spurs top of the table, at least for 48 hours. Instead it is a hugely frustrating blow to dampen spirits heading into the international break.

Simons desperately needed in midfield

Simons was presented to the Spurs fans ahead of kick-off and it quickly become apparent how much the hosts could have done with him on the pitch.

The midfield three of Rodrigo Bentancur, Joao Palhinha and Pape Matar Sarr delivered perfectly against City last weekend, working hard out of possession and regularly turning the ball over.

In games like this though, where Spurs had more than 60% of the ball, the shortcomings are obvious. Spurs could not play through the lines and there was a lack of invention in the middle of the park.

Sarr and Bentancur were willing runners into forward areas, but the passing was too safe and predictable.

Lucas Bergvall came on early in the second half, though beyond a couple of long throws was hardly involved. Simons' introduction into the Spurs side cannot come soon enough.

Reality hits for Frank

All appeared well in the Spurs world heading into the match. Simons' presence had lifted the mood and Frank's stock was high after an impressive start his reign.

However, it did not take long for frustrations to emerge. Irritation at the referee did not help, but the Spurs fans were quick to voice their agitation towards their own players.

There were groans when Guglielmo Vicario took too long to play out from the back and again when Brennan Johnson headed the ball into the Bournemouth box instead of bringing it down.

Ironic cheers met the decision to bring Johnson off early in the second half and while boos at half-time were fairly muted, there were far more at the full-time whistle.

For all this was a poor performance, that felt harsh considering how Spurs have started the season, though the underlying frustration at the transfer window, even with Simons' arrival, is an obvious factor.

Frank had a largely patient and forgiving set of supporters at Brentford. Here was an early reminder of the demands he will face in the Spurs dugout.

Left wing needs sorting

Spurs' desire to sign another winger in the final days of the winger is no secret and that can only have been strengthened after this performance.

Johnson scored against Burnley and Manchester City, yet his overall performances remain unconvincing. He can be too easy of a scapegoat at times for fans but his decision-making here was frustrating again.

The problem for Frank is there is no clear alternative in the current squad. Wilson Odobert and Mathys Tel both came on but they are raw and there is little sign they will consistently produce the necessary end product.

Simons can play on the left wing and that versatility is a real benefit. However, his quality is desperately needed in the No10 role.

It all points to a frantic 48 hours in the transfer window. Frank does not have the necessary options to get this squad competing on multiple front and the addition of a top-quality winger feels essential before Monday's deadline.
