Three things that will 'definitely' happen if Unai Emery becomes Newcastle United manager

Unai Emery is being touted as the favourite to take over the role at Newcastle United. The fabled position will see the new coach bag a job with an expected budget that rockets above most clubs in the world.

The new Saudi-backed consortium will look to help the former Arsenal head coach, should he take the job, turn the Magpies into a winning machine that aims to emulate the rise and success of clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester City.

Unai Emery is no stranger to the Premier League and has vast experience in multiple countries. It, therefore, is simple to predict several occurrences which will take place should the Spaniard get the job in the northeast.

Emery will face a brand-new type of challenge

Newcastle United currently sit second bottom of the English topflight. Steve Bruce oversaw the side’s survival last season, but the campaign has begun even worse in 2021/22.

Emery’s previous four jobs have been with Villarreal, Arsenal, PSG and Sevilla. Clubs who have not been concerned with the thought of relegation. Emery was tasked with winning trophies and qualifying for the Champions League.

These may also be the ambitions of the new Newcastle owners, however, avoiding plummeting into the second tier must be the priority. Whether Emery is a coach who can help his side avoid the drop before building towards a lucrative future is impossible to tell.

Greater responsibilities than Arsenal job

When appointed head coach at Arsenal, Emery was surrounded by people in many executive positions. Raul Sanllehi as Head of Football. Sven Mislintat delved into the inner workings of the club’s recruitment. Vinai Venkatesham focused on the side’s commercial dealings. Edu eventually joined as technical director.

Emery at Newcastle has a much thinner structure behind him, and it will be expected of him to look more into the off-field responsibilities of the club.

He may enjoy the greater grasp on the club's transfer business, however, being a coach first could see him stretched too thin especially with the aforementioned fight for Premier League survival first on the agenda.

Familiar faces will arrive on Tyneside

When Emery does get an opportunity to search the transfer market for players, the Spaniard has a habit of bringing in some old favourites of his.

At Villarreal, he brought in Dani Parejo who he had worked with when at Valencia. Upon his arrival with PSG, he opted to move for Grzegorz Krychowiak from his former side Sevilla.

Newcastle can expect to see similar moves and he could look back to the Yellow Submarine to poach its best talents with the promise of Premier League football and an increased wage packet.

Emery has plenty of known and unknown quantities about his style and delivery. Whether it will succeed in the Newcastle environment however is very much a mystery.
