Three teenagers arrested over Sydney grassfire

Three teenagers have been arrested in relation to a grassfire which broke out in Sydney's south-west yesterday.

A passing motorist alerted authorities to the fire which ignited in bushland off The Northern Road in Harrington Park around 5.30pm.

Using information obtained from the public, police officers searched the nearby area and arrested two boys, aged 15 and 16, near Harrington Parkway.

A third teen, aged 15, was arrested a short time later.

Firefighters extinguished the bushfire by 6.15pm and the teenagers were taken to Narellan Police Station for interviews.

Three mobile phones have been seized for forensic examination and all three boys are eligible to be dealt with under the Young Offender's Act.

According to the NSW Sentencing Council, about half of all fire offenders in the state are aged 24 years and under.

On Saturday, a 51-year-old man was charged with allegedly lighting a fire at Ebor, 80 kilometres of Armidale, in an attempt to protect a cannabis crop.

The fire has burnt more than 10,750 hectares.

So far this Spring, six people have died and 530 homes have been destroyed by bushfires across the state.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said last week was a "huge wake up call" for NSW.

Last month Emergency Services Minister David Elliott described the deliberate lighting of bushfires as a "bastard act".
