Three team probing attack on woman cop in Saryu express: DGP

LUCKNOW: Amid the hustle and bustle of patients, their attendants and medical staff on the third floor of KGMU’s surgical ward, armed men in khakee and plain clothes are keeping close watch on everyone that is walking close by private room in which injured woman head constable of Sultanpur police is being treated.

At around 4am on August 30, cop was found in pool of blood with several deep cuts on her face and head while lying beneath the berth of the general coach of Saryu express at Ayodhya junction.

On Monday, hours after Allahabad high court division bench comprising Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker and Justice Ashutosh Srivastava, heard Uttar Pradesh government railway police officials, as they were summoned to apprise court about the status report on the ongoing investigation---several top officials including the Director General of Police, Vijaya Kumar, Principal Secretary Home Sanjay Prasad, Special DG Law and Order Prashant Kumar and ADG UP GRP Jai Narain Singh paid visit to injured woman cop and took stock of her health and security parameter around her.

"Three teams are probing the case including special task force (STF), GRP (Lucknow division) and local police (Ayodhya). Soon the accused involved in the crime will be behind bars," said DGP before leaving KGMU.

Meanwhile, speaking to TOI, Special DG Law and Order Prashant Kumar said, "Victim’s condition is stable, and she has started responding. However, she is still not in condition to narrate the sequence of events."

Video footage captured inside the coach on August 30 morning by first responders, saw the woman cop writhing in pain while she bled. The victim was without her lower part of uniform when rescued.

Officer Prashant added, "Rape has been ruled out as per medical report. We now pray for her healthy recovery soon."

Meanwhile, on anonymity an official source said that Principal Secretary Home Sanjay Prasad had instructed to ensure that no person (barring immediate relatives) is allowed near to victims, especially personnel from political parties.

On Sunday, victim’s younger brother appealed social media users to stop spreading rumors about rape of his sister. However, when TOI attempted to contact him, he refused to speak.

Based on the written complaint of victim’s brother, an FIR has been lodged under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) against unknown person by Ayodhya Cantt GRP.

Victim is posted in Sultanpur district with 181 women helpline cells under Kotwali police limits. She was assigned duty for ‘sawan ka mela’ at Ayodhya district on August 30, and was supposed to alight at Ayodhya Junction from Saryu Express, but somehow she missed to deboard at station,” said Pappu Yadav, the station house officer of Ayodhya Cantt station GRP.

The GRP claimed that the injured cop had boarded Saryu Express at 9:15 pm from Sultanpur on August 29 night from and was supposed to alight at Ayodhya junction at 12:01 am, as her duty timing was 3 am to 3pm on Wednesday.

“The victim continued her journey in the train. Saryu express reached its last destination Mankapur junction at 12:50 am, which was 38 km away from Ayodhya junction. On the return journey from Mankapur junction, the train reached Ayodhya junction at 3:46 am, and it was here the passengers who boarded the express alerted the GRP men,” said official source.

"There were no other passengers in the coach when the victim was rescued, however, it was the passengers of Ayodhya junction that alerted GRP after they had boarded the coach and saw the injured cop," the GRP SP said.

The injured cop hails from Prayagraj and joined Uttar Pradesh police in 1998. She is unmarried.
