Three taken to hospital after M5 crash where lorry driver formed barricade

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust has confirmed three people were taken to hospital following a crash on the M5 motorway last night (March 24) near Weston-super-Mare.

The multi-vehicle collision closed two lanes and caused a queue of traffic which stretched back for more than five miles.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service last night confirmed that three vehicles had been involved in the crash and, at around 6:30pm, emergency services had been in the process of "making vehicles safe", before lanes reopened fully at around 8:15pm, according to National Highways South West.

Today the ambulance service confirmed three people involved in the collision yesterday evening have now been taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 16:56hrs on Wednesday 23 March to a multiple-vehicle collision on the M5 south of Bristol.

"We sent an operations officer and two double-crewed land ambulances. We conveyed one patient to Weston General Hospital in one ambulance and two patients to Southmead Hospital in the other.”

It is not yet clear the extent of injuries, however one of the HGV drivers who stopped to protect those involved from further accident by blocking the road and helping those injured, told Bristol Live that "there was extensive damage to two of the vehicles involved but all drivers had got themselves out of their vehicles by the time I made it over to them".
