Three takeaways from Bears’ preseason opener vs. Panthers

Three key takeaways from the Bears’ home opener:

• Ro money. One reason inside linebacker Roquan Smith can be an all-pro this year: new defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano will blitz him more than Vic Fangio did last year. It took four plays for that to be the case Thursday — Smith shot the gap and sacked against quarterback Kyle Allen.

• Neon Deon. Deon Bush finished last year starting for the injured Eddie Jackson and started training camp filling in for a hurt Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. He impressed both times. His second-quarter interception — the first of his NFL career — came when third-round pick Will Grier threw the ball right to him.

• Bad Bunting blocking. Coach Matt Nagy called tight end Ian Bunting, who led the Bears with 77 receiving yards on three catches, a “natural pass-catcher.” The Bears want to see if Hinsdale Central grad can block. In the second quarter, rookie Brian Burns — who had 10 sacks at Florida State last year — beat him inside for the second of his two first-half sacks.
