LOS ANGELES — The Bears crumbled under the bright lights of a nationally televised game against the Rams, and their season is virtually over after a 17-7 loss.
Here are three quick takeaways from a rough night at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum:
Rams are also bad. While there’s more finality for the Bears at 4-6, the 6-4 Rams aren’t going to the playoffs, either. Jared Goff (69.9 passer rating) actually played worse than Mitch Trubisky until the late touchdown drive to put the game away, and their defense missed several opportunities to cash in on the Bears’ miscues. Sean McVay shouldn’t feel much better about the rest of his season than Matt Nagy does.
Trevathan toughing it out. When the Bears needed to clear a roster spot before the Rams game in order to add linebacker James Vaughters, it was interesting that they put tight end Trey Burton on Injured Reserve rather than linebacker Danny Trevathan. The fact that they haven’t ruled out Trevathan, who suffered a stomach-turning elbow injury against the Lions, is incredible. “It speaks to who he is,” general manager Ryan Pace said on the team’s pre-game show. “You never want to count that guy out.”
Gurley pummels defense. Playing without Trevathan and defensive tackle Akiem Hicks is putting a dent in the Bears’ run defense. Rams running back Todd Gurley hit them with 97 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries for the fifth-highest rushing total against this defense over the last two seasons. The Bears were No. 1 in stopping the run last season, but now sit ninth at 94 yards allowed per game.
