Three Sky Sports programmes axed as broadcaster continues major football coverage shake-up

A trio of popular Sky Sports programmes are set to be axed as the broadcaster continues its major shake-up of the way it covers football.

The Telegraph report that Goals on Sunday, The Debate and the Sunday Supplement are all being taken off-air following the departure of a number of high-profile personnel.

Scott Minto was the latest presenter to announce his departure from the broadcaster, following the exits of pundits Matt Le Tissier, Phil Thompson and Charlie Nicholas.

It appears that Sky is undergoing a major change in approach over the way it covers football, with one insider revealing there was a sense of shock over the departures.

Newspaper review show Sunday Supplement’s axing was revealed earlier this month, although at that point Sky had not ruled out a return for the show later in the year.

At that time, an increase in the amount of live football set to be shown on the channel was cited as the reason for the end of Sunday Supplement, yet it appears now to have been part of a more wide-ranging shake-up at the broadcaster.

In regards to the trio of pundits departing Soccer Saturday, it is claimed that the channel is likely to use a rotation of pundits instead of returning to a settled line-up.

Whilst Paul Merson and Clinton Morrison are set to stay on the show, Sky will use other guests who have made sporadic appearances on Soccer Saturday whilst also involving new faces.

It follows a similar change of approach to Sky’s cricket coverage, with David Gower and Ian Botham both dropped from the broadcaster last year.
