Three separate probes launched into RTE leaving party as stars apologise

Three probes are now under way into the attendance by RTE stars at a staff leaving do as Miriam O’Callaghan became the latest to issue an apology live on air.

The Prime Time host was “deeply sorry” at the start of her show on Sunday.

Bryan Dobson and news presenters David McCullagh and Eileen Dunne all posed for pictures at the gathering on November 12, where social distancing was ignored and masks were not worn.

Ms O’Callaghan told listeners of RTE Radio One’s Sunday With Miriam it is “completely her own fault”.

She said: “I’m also acutely aware that as someone in the public eye, it’s so important to lead by example.

“By posing in this photograph in the way I did, I seriously failed to do that and in that moment I know I let everyone down and for that I will be forever sorry.”

The gathering took place to mark the retirement of receptionist Phil Collins, who was leaving after 40 years.

It was reported TDs on the Dail’s Culture Committee are to investigate what happened.

Gardai are also probing if the event was organised and RTE said it is holding an internal health and safety review.

A Garda spokesman said: “An Garda Siochana is carrying out enquiries focused on the organisers into an alleged event as described and the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions will be sought in respect of any further actions to be taken.

“Personal responsibility in attendance, social distancing, wearing of masks (other than on public transport and in commercial premises) and other such public health guidelines are not penal regulations.”

Anchors Dobson, McCullagh and Dunne have already apologised, as has the State broadcaster’s head of news Jon Williams.

Political correspondent Paul Cunningham and TV presenter Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh also attended the event at RTE HQ in Donnybrook, South Dublin.

Mr Cunningham said: “Everyone should make every effort to abide by the Covid-19 guidelines.

“I want to apologise unreservedly for not observing those measures fully when posing for a photograph with a colleague. It shouldn’t have happened.”

In August, retired journalist Sean O’Rourke lost a planned new RTE slot after he attended the Oireachtas Golf Society dinner in Galway.

His former colleague Charlie Bird said the station should extend “an olive branch” to him amid claims others have just been asked to say sorry instead of falling on their swords.
